Janet's Star Trek Voyager Site

NIGHTINGALE : Episode 154

Janeway: "Captain's log, stardate 54274.7. Lieutenant Torres has finally convinced me that I can't put off a major maintenance overhaul any longer. We've set down on an uninhabited planet and I've sent shuttles to search for supplies."

Janeway enters engineering where everyone is extremely busy as a result of the maintenance overhaul.

Janeway asks Torres who continues about her work and clearly under much stress and in a hurry: "What about the impulse upgrade?"
Torres: "Day after tomorrow." She tells Nicoletti as she passes: "Put a new phase compensator on that relay."
Janeway: "Environmental control?"
Torres: "The thermal regulators are still running a little hot."
Janeway: "Too bad we can't just keep our windows open. How long till the warp drive is back online?"
Torres: "Six days."
Janeway: "You sure you can't get it done any faster?"
Torres: "Captain, I don't like sitting still any more than you do, but repairs this extensive take time."
Suddenly the power goes down. In the gloom, Torres tells Mendez: "Mendez, track down that power drain."
"Right away," Mendez replies and hurries off.
Janeway: "I know this ship has been through a lot but you told me this would only take a few days."
Torres: "That was before I discovered the microfractures in the starboard nacelle and the fused relays in the main computer."
Power is unexpectedly restored.
Torres: "Who did that?"
They look round. Icheb comes forward hesitantly.
Icheb: "I noticed a charge imbalance in the EPS feed. I'm sorry if I-"
Torres is impressed. "It could've taken us hours to find that."
Icheb hands Torres a PADD: "I have a tactical systems report for you. It's from Commander Tuvok."
Torres: "I'd say you're capable of a lot more than delivering PADDs, Icheb."
Janeway: "I agree. Until we get under way again, he's assigned to you."
As Janeway goes to leave engineering, she comments: "With him on your team, maybe you'll get this job done a little faster."

Aboard the Delta Flyer, Neelix is asleep....and snoring. "Neelix?" asks Kim, hearing him and turning to investigate the sound. Kim observes him for a moment, then turns back to the helm controls and mischievously sets off a klaxon. Neelix wakes up with a start.
"Rise and shine, it's 0500!" Kim tells Neelix cheerfully. audio clip

Neelix groans: "Already? Oh, I was dreaming we found the dilithium and were back aboard Voyager."
Seven: "Dreaming is an accurate description."
Neelix examines the console in front of him. "Didn't we already scan this nebula?"
Seven: "Four times."
Kim: "I thought the Borg were known for being thorough."
Seven: "The Borg value efficiency, not redundancy."
Kim: "I've got a hunch about this nebula. There's dilithium in there somewhere."

Neelix: "I'm getting some fluctuating energy readings."
Kim: "From the nebula?"
Neelix: "No, it's weapon's fire!"
An alien starship comes up close to them and fires past them. The weapons fire causes another alien ship to decloak right in front of the Delta Flyer!

<
Kim: "Let's get out of here."
Neelix: "We're receiving a distress call."
The distress call is broken up but the captain on the attacked alien ship, which is of the Kraylor species, can be seen saying: "Have casualties. Please help us! We're on a humanitarian mission delivering medical supplies." The transmission is cut off.

Kim, though moved, has to make the right decision. "Reverse course."
Neelix: "We can't just leave them!"
Kim: "Starfleet policy: interference in alien conflicts is strictly prohibited."
Neelix: "You heard their captain: it's a medical ship!"
Seven: "Their shields are down. Life support is failing on at least three decks."
Kim: "Open a channel to the other ship." The attacking ship's captain appears on the viewscreen. He is of the Annari species. Kim tells him: "This is Ensign Kim of the Delta Flyer. I don't know what you're fighting about but it looks like you've won. The people on the other ship have casualties. We'd like-"
Annari captain: "This isn't your concern."
Kim: "I'm not taking sides. I only want to help the wounded."
The Annari captain fires a warning shot at the Delta Flyer. "Withdraw, immediately." He ends communications contact.
Seven: "They're charging weapons."

Kim: "Neelix, set our deflector beam for a narrow pulse. Seven, let me know the second their weapons are raised fully charged. I might be able to trigger an overload."
Neelix: "The deflector bandwidth is at .4 microns."
Seven: "Now."

Kim flicks a switch, activating the Delta Flyer's deflector beam. This successfully causes an overload and there is an explosion on the Annari ship. At the same time, Kim steers the Delta Flyer away at high speed.
Seven reports: "Their weapons are offline. Shields are down. They're retreating."
Kim: "Take the helm. Neelix, you're with me."
Kim and Neelix go into the aft compartment. There they will gather medkits and beam to the stricken Kraylor ship.

Kim and Neelix beam aboard the Kraylor ship.

On the damaged and dimly lit bridge of the Kraylor ship they see the body of the dead helmsman.

They find only one survivor, called Terek, whom Kim helps get to his feet.
Kim: "Who's in charge here?"
Terek: "He is." He points to the dead captain. To Kim: "What are we going to do?"
Kim: "It's ok. We're here to help. The ship that attacked you is gone."

Two Kraylor rush onto the Bridge, pointing guns. The male, Loken, demands of Kim: "Who are you?"
Kim: "Harry Kim, from the starship Voyager. We're responding to your distress call. We could treat your wounded."
Loken: "The captain?"
Terek tells Loken: "Dead, sir. So are the rest of the officers."
Neelix: "I'm reading a total of twenty-seven lifeforms aboard the ship."
Dayla, the female Kraylor, explains: "There were fifty-six of us."
Loken: "How are we going to get home without the officers?
Kim: "We need to restore main power. Where's the warp interface?
Loken: "We're passengers, not crewmen."
Terek takes Kim across the Bridge to a control interface: "You can access engineering systems from here."
Kim works the controls and reads the diagnostics. "Your warp core is intact. I think I can bring it back online. Can you monitor anti-matter flow?"
Terek: "I'm not sure."
Kim: "Just watch this read-out and tell me if it starts to fluctuate."
He activates some controls and the warp engine comes back online as partial power is restored, which also means that lighting is partially restored too.
Kim: "I'm routing emergency power to structural integrity. Atmospheric pressure is returning to normal. Neelix, we'll go through the ship, deck by deck, find the survivors."
Loken: "We need to get our cloak back online."
Kim: "I'll take a look at it as soon as I've repaired the engines."
Loken: "No, the cloak is more important."
Dayla: "The Annari have far more powerful weapons than we do. If they come back, the cloak is our best defence."
Kim: "We'll try to get it back online." Kim taps his combadge. audio: combadgecombadge "Kim to Delta Flyer."
Seven, via comms: "Go ahead."
Kim: "I need your help, Seven. Looks like we're going to be here for a while."
