![]() | A short while later Janeway and Tuvok begin the special meditation.
Janeway: "Where are you?" In a laboratory, under ground." Janeway: "Is Teero there?" There is someone. It's him." Janeway: "Describe what's happening." |
![]() | Tuvok's mind recalls the buried memory. It is some seven years before, and he is restrained, kept against his will on a laboratory bench with equipment of menacing intent around him. Teero's voice addresses him: "Lieutenant."
Janeway calls him. "Tuvok? Tuvok?" |
![]() | But Tuvok is lost in the resurfacing memories.
Teero: "It is Lieutenant, isn't it? I'm sure your Maquis comrades would be interested to know your Starfleet rank. Don't worry, I don't like to expose you." |
![]() | Tuvok: "What do you want?"
Teero: "You. You're the perfect subject." Tuvok: "For what?" Teero: "I'm a student of the mind. Yours is remarkable: disciplined, orderly, on the surface, that is. Beneath, boiling emotions, repressed violence. In a sense you're two different men: one I can never hope to manipulate, but the other...." Tuvok: "I've been trained to resist mind control." Teero: "That's the rational, logical part of you at work. But I want to reach your inner fire, your spirit." Tuvok: "Why?" As Teero approaches to inject him, Tuvok, unwilling to resist physically, begs: "Please, please, please, don't!" As Teero leans over him he injects him. He begins to implant powerful mental instructions: "Pagh t'em far, B'tanay." |
![]() | The memories break off and Tuvok is suddenly back in the reality of 2377. But the mental image of Teero, with its forcibly induced control over Tuvok's mind, is here too!
Tuvok shouts at Teero: "Stay away from me!" |
![]() |
![]() | Janeway: "Tuvok." But Tuvok does not hear her. He is too bound up in the mental struggle between himself and Teero's mind control.
Teero: "Complete your mission." Tuvok: "No!" Teero: "This is a holy time." |
![]() | Janeway goes to put a reassuring hand on Tuvok's shoulder as he is so agitated: "Commander." But Tuvok pushes Janeway aside. | ![]() |

![]() | Janeway does not realise that Teero's mind control has at last become too strong for Tuvok to resist. He taps his combadge. "Tuvok to Chakotay."
Chakotay, via comms: "Go ahead." Tuvok: "Pagh t'em far, B'tanay." A strange change comes over Chakotay. He replies, "Understood." and strides from the Astrometrics Lab. Tuvok has passed on Teero's instructions. |
![]() Janeway taps her combadge | In the Brig, Janeway uses her combadge to try and contact Chakotay: "Janeway to Chakotay." There is no reply. "Commander!" There is still no reply. |
![]() | Janeway turns back to Tuvok, convinced that he has within him an explanation for their troubles and the solution.
Janeway: "'Pagh t'em far, B'tanay.' What did that mean, Tuvok? Tell me!" Tuvok: "This is a holy time. A time of awakening." Janeway is becoming increasingly desperate and stern-voiced - she knows that there is a major threat here and only Tuvok has the answers. "This Teero has awakened you to do what? If you can remember, you can fight him, you can resist. What does he want?" Tuvok: "To give us instructions. Janeway: "What kind of instructions?!" Teero's mental image attacks Tuvok's mind more strongly. Teero insists: "Focus on your task!" |
![]() | In Sickbay an audio alert on the computer console draws the Doctor's attention to strange readings coming from Chakotay's cortical monitor.
Doctor: "It's Chakotay." Paris, who is now by the biobed on which his recently woken wife lies, asks the Doctor: "What is it?" |
Doctor: "I'm not sure." He taps his combadge.
combadge "Sickbay to Commander Chakotay." There is no response. "Computer, locate Chakotay."
Computer: "Commander Chakotay is in Sickbay."

![]() | Together Chakotay and Torres gather the other former Maquis who were attacked by Tuvok and who had then mind-melded with them. Armed with phaser rifles, Chakotay's group, at his gesture, split into smaller groups. Torres and two others head for Engineering..... |

![]() | As Chakotay and his group enter, Kim gets up. "Good to see you, Commander," he says.
"It's good to be back," replies Chakotay. Swiftly he draws his phaser. Kim, taken by surprise, is unable to draw his phaser in time, and is stunned by Chakotay's phaser blast. |
