Bridge. Janeway: "Open a channel." The image of Older Kes appears on the viewscreen. "Kes." Older Kes, on viewscreen: "Captain Janeway, I need your help. Will you please give me permission to come aboard?" Janeway, via comms: "Of course. What's happened?" Older Kes, on viewscreen: "Please, let me come aboard." She closes contact.

Tuvok: "Her ship is accelerating. It's on a collision course." Paris: "Five seconds to impact."

Janeway: "Tuvok."

He understands and activates a control.

Chakotay: "Lock on a tractor beam. Evasive maneuvers." Tuvok: "Shields are holding. Her ship is intact." Kim: "Captain, a transporter was activated just before impact. She's beamed aboard."

As Older Kes moves through Voyager, her mental powers set off bulkhead explosions and destabilise parts of the ship's structure.

Kim: "I'm reading bulkhead ruptures. Deck 11, section 17...18...19."

Chakotay to Janeway: "How did you know?"

Janeway ignores the question. To Tuvok: "Ready." To Chakotay: "Shut down the warp core. You have the Bridge."

She and Tuvok leave the Bridge. Another member of the Bridge crew takes over Tuvok's post.

Older Kes enters Main Engineering. Oddly, Security did not try to stop her as she walked through the ship, and there is no one here in Engineering.

Suddenly she hears a voice, and is surprised - it is her own! She peers up and round, wondering where it is coming from.

She turns to see....her younger self talking to her. It is a holographic recording. Younger Kes: "Remember me, the innocent child you're here to save? You blame Captain Janeway but the choice was yours. You made the decision to leave Ocampa, and you made the decision to leave Voyager. If you're watching me now, you've come back to take revenge on the people who cared about you. That's not who you are, and that's not who I am."

Younger Kes: "Don't do this. Find another way home. Captain Janeway will help you if you give her a chance."

Younger Kes: "Try to remember who you were. Try to remember me."

The holographic recording ends and Younger Kes disappears.

The doors open and Older Kes turns.

Janeway and Tuvok enter, armed with phasers.

Janeway: "Don't you remember? You made that holo-recording because you didn't want this to happen again. Three years ago, you travelled back in time. Kes, you wanted to take that woman with you and you were willing to hand the rest of us over to the Vidiians to do it. It didn't work. You forced me to kill you, Kes. If you go back now, it'll all happen again."

She hands her phaser to Tuvok, to prove she means no harm, that she will not phaser Older Kes (as she did in the past), and moves closer to her old friend. "Just before this terrible thing happened, you told me you had nowhere to go. That's not true. Stay here with us."

Older Kes: "I can't. I don't belong here! I need to be with my own people." Janeway: "You told me you had the ability to get home, but you were afraid the Ocampans wouldn't accept you. Why?"

Older Kes, softly: "I remember." Janeway: "What? What do you remember?" Older Kes: "The holo-recording. I remember making it. You asked me to help you to help myself. You wanted me to remember who I was." She sighs. "These years were so filled with confusion....and anger. I buried the memory. I'd almost forgotten."

Janeway: "Does it really matter which Kes goes home?"

Transporter Room. Neelix, handing her a small package: "A few snacks for the journey. You do still like leola root?"

Older Kes: "Thank you." As Neelix looks intently at her. "What?"

Neelix: "Just looking." Older Kes: "See anyone you know?" Neelix: "Only you."

Older Kes enters the transporter chamber and takes up position.

Janeway: "Good-bye, Kes."

Older Kes: "Captain."

Tuvok activates the transporter controls and beams Older Kes to her space shuttle.

Neelix turns and leaves, feeling sad. He knows he will never see Kes again.

Tuvok leaves the transporter controls and comes over to Janeway: "What should we tell the others?" Janeway: "A friend got lost. We helped her find her way."

She turns and leaves, closely followed by Tuvok.

Older Kes' shuttle leaves Voyager.

Voyager speeds towards the Alpha Quadrant, while Older Kes heads to Ocampa in a shuttle whose engines are enhanced by her mental powers. The spacecraft head in opposite directions, but both are heading for home.
