Airponics Bay. Now that the ship's violent shaking has stopped, Janeway tries to rise. Older Kes starts getting up too.

Janeway faces Older Kes again.

But Older Kes ignores the phaser and marches purposefully toward her to attack again.

Janeway fires.

Older Kes is slammed backwards, but is only temporarily stopped.

Older Kes hurls her thoughts at Janeway again....

....throwing her back.

Janeway recovers but her strength is draining. With an effort, knowing she may not recover from another blast from Older Kes, she quickly adjusts her phaser. Janeway: "It's set to kill, Kes."

Older Kes ignores her, so vengeful and determined is she to overcome the other. She does not take Janeway seriously and anyway, her powers will protect her.

Janeway has no choice. She fires. Older Kes falls.

Although she had to do it, Janeway is horrified and grief-stricken.

Janeway goes over and turns her over.

As Janeway looks down....

, in death Older Kes reverts to her normal old appearance.

Via comms: "Janeway to Bridge. Status?" Chakotay, via comms: "The Vidiians are in retreat. Everything all right down there?" Janeway, via comms: "For now." One Kes is dead, the other unconscious, and there is still the future to deal with, however.

Engineering. Tuvok: "She was here in my last premonition. She appeared older. Her face was tired." Janeway: "What was she doing?" Tuvok: "She had her hands on the casing as if she was drawing energy from it." Janeway: "The tachyons are concentrated here. It's possible she needed the core to travel back in time." Tuvok: "If that's true, then she'll need it again."

Janeway: "And we don't know when that'll be. We have to be ready." Doctor, via comms: "Doctor to the Captain." Janeway, via comms: "Go ahead." Doctor, via comms: "Kes has regained consciousness." Janeway looks at Tuvok meaningfully.

Monitor display in Sickbay.

Younger Kes is sitting on a bio-bed. Tuvok and Janeway are there. Tuvok: "What do you remember?" Younger Kes: "I was in Airponics, and then I felt dizzy, and then I was watching myself." Doctor: "YourSELF???"

Janeway: "Computer, deactivate EMH." The Doctor's program goes offline.

Janeway: "What I'm about to tell you stays between the three of us, understood?" Younger Kes: "Yes, Captain."

Janeway to Younger Kes: "Something terrible has happened, or more precisely, will happen."

Younger Kes listens intently as Janeway tells her: "We're going to need your help to prevent it from happening again."

It is the year 2376.

Captain's Ready Room. Janeway: "It took exhaustive research," moving toward the replicator, "sifting through teraquads of data, separating fact from rumour, but eventually I arrived at the truth." Tuvok: "Captain?"

At the replicator, she turns to it and taps the controls. Something materialises. She turns with it. It is a birthday cake, with a lit candle. She breaks into a broad smile. Janeway: "Happy birthday."

Tuvok: "Thank you." Janeway: "So, it's not long before you hit the big three digits, huh?" Tuvok: "Indeed. Have you informed anyone else of your discovery?" Janeway: "Don't worry, Tuvok, my lips are sealed."

As he holds the cake, wondering what to do with it, she tells him: "Well, you're supposed to blow out the candle." Tuvok: "That is not a Vulcan custom." Janeway: "Humour me."

The com. signal sounds.
Chakotay, via comms: "Captain to the Bridge."
Janeway, via comms: "On my way." To Tuvok: "Well?"

Tuvok blows out the candle. Tuvok: "It was a fire hazard." She smiles.

The doors between the Bridge and the Ready Room open and they enter the Bridge.

Chakotay: "We're receiving a distress call - a small vessel on an intercept course." Janeway: "Lifesigns?"

Kim: "One." Puzzled: "It's Ocampan."

Janeway, aloud to herself: "I'd almost forgotten." Her enigmatic words puzzle Chakotay. Tuvok: "We're being hailed."

Janeway: "Red Alert." Klaxons sound, lights dim, red lights flash. "Raise shields." Chakotay: "Captain?" Janeway, via comms: "All hands, this is the Bridge. Begin emergency evacuation of Deck 11. Repeat: all hands evacuate Deck 11."

In Engineering, Torres calls out: "You heard her."

Torres, as staff begin to evacuate. "Get moving. Now!"
