In Sickbay Tuvok is lying unconscious on the primary biobed. The Doctor is working hard to treat him. Older Kes, as the nurse, is assisting. Doctor: "20 milligrammes lectrazine." He administers the hypospray medication.

Doctor: "Cortical stimulator." Older Kes attaches the device to Tuvok.

But secretly she adjusts the controls. Tuvok is dangerous to her, especially because he is telepathic. The Doctor instructs: "We'll start at 20 millijoules."

Older Kes: "Ready." Doctor: "Now." But when the cortical stimulator is activated, Tuvok convulses. Doctor: "He's gone into synaptic shock! I don't understand."

Voyager continues to travel through the vacuoles, with Voyager doing the driving, working its way through the scheduled 216 course maneuvers.

In the Doctor's office, Janeway looks at the patient from a distance: "Can I speak with him?" Doctor: "I think it's best to keep him sedated for now."

Janeway: "When did this begin?" Doctor: "Early this afternoon, in Engineering." Janeway: "Time, I need the exact time." Doctor: "Lieutenant Torres called Sickbay at 14 hundred 22 hours." (I give this in full as "14:22" could be pronounced in more than one way.)

Janeway goes over to the LCARS wall monitor: "Computer, display proximity scan of Lieutenant Tuvok at 14 hundred 22 hours."

The scan is displayed. "Oh." Doctor, joining her at the monitor: "Captain?" Janeway: "Tachyons." Doctor: "I beg your pardon?" Janeway: "There was a surge of tachyon particles just before Tuvok collapsed."

Doctor: "That could have triggered this, but where did they come from?" Janeway: "They're normally caused by temporal distortions." Doctor: "Time travel?" She has no intention of confiding fully in the Doctor or anyone else, not where changing time might be involved. Janeway: "Let me know if his condition changes."

She leaves and enters the main Sickbay area where Older Kes is working. "Kes, you have telepathic abilities. Have you experienced anything unusual during the past couple of days? Hallucinations, premonitions?"

Older Kes: "No, nothing." She realises that Janeway is suspicious, and annoyingly quite accurate in her suspicions.

Janeway: "If you do, you'll let me know?" Older Kes: "Of course, Captain." Janeway leaves.

Older Kes drops the work she is doing, or pretending to do, and moves toward the Doctor. "We're low on neuro-stabilisers. I'll go replicate some more."

She leaves before he can reply. He can only call after her: "Hurry back." But she has already gone. It is not escaping his notice that today at least people keep suddenly leaving him without explanation or even a proper goodbye...even Kes.

Kes' quarters. Vidiian captain, on monitor: "Where's the tactical data you promised us?" Older Kes: "I'm downloading it now. I'll transmit it to you once you've arrived." Vidiian, on monitor: "I need it now." Older Kes: "Janeway's already suspicious. If I transmit it now, I'll be discovered." Vidiian, on monitor: "That's your problem."

Older Kes, crossly: "Apparently it's yours too."

She has made her point as the Vidiian captain has to, reluctantly, accept this. He will have to wait.

Bridge. Janeway: "Gentlemen, scan for tachyon particles deck by deck." Kim: "Tachyons?" Janeway: "Do it." Chakotay: "Looking for something specific?" Janeway: "I'm not sure."

Suddenly something impacts the hull. Voyager goes to Red Alert automatically. Klaxons sound, red lights flash, ordinary lights dim. As Janeway and Chakotay hurry to their seats in the Command Centre, Chakotay orders: "Report!"

Paris: "We're under attack. A Vidiian ship is closing on our position."

Janeway: "Battle stations." Throughout the ship, there is a flurry of activity as personnel hurry to their stations.

The Vidiian ship that Older Kes contacted swoops in, firing volley after volley at the Federation Starship.

Voyager, with shields up, goes into evasive maneuvers, but the Vidiians pursue relentlessly, still firing.

Voyager shakes as Vidiian weapons fire pounds the ship. Kim: "We've lost warp drive and weapons." Chakotay: "They're cutting through our shields. Remodulate." Kim: "I'm trying! They keep matching the frequencies."

Chakotay: "We've still got impulse."

Paris: "They've taken out navigation. I can't plot a course."

In the Airponics Bay, Older Kes is at the LCARS monitor she appropriated....

....and is sending the Vidiians the tactical information they need to neutralise Voyager's defences.

The Vidiian ship swoops over Voyager its prey.

Boarding clamps descend from the Vidiian ship and seize hold of Voyager. One lands immediately in front of the Messhall windows.

Chakotay: "They're cutting an access route through the hull. Evacuate Deck 3 and seal it off."

Janeway, via comms: "Bridge to Sickbay. Are you ready with that neural agent?"

The Doctor and Wildman are in the Medical Lab next to the Doctor's office. He replies, via comms: "Aye, Captain." Janeway, via comms: "Stand by to release it on Deck 3." Doctor, via comms: "Acknowledged." To Wildman: "50 millilitres should suffice."

Wildman notices the instrument read-outs and calls urgently: "Doctor!" He hurries over and looks. He taps his combadge. Via comms: "Doctor to the Bridge. Environmental controls aren't responding!"

Bridge. Janeway: "Harry, what's going on?" Kim: "We've been locked out of that system." Janeway: "What do you mean, locked out?" Kim: "The command relays have been fused."

Janeway, thinking aloud: "They knew where to find us, they knew our shield frequencies, which systems to target." Kim: "We're being boarded."

Chakotay: "I'm reading an EM fluctuation. It could be a transmission." Janeway: "Location?" Chakotay: "Airponics bay." Janeway: "Who's down there?" Chakotay: "I'm picking up two bio-readings." Puzzled: "The sensors must be malfunctioning. They're both reading as Kes."

Janeway, via comms: "Security to Airponics bay." As she heads for the exit, to Chakotay: "Shut down control functions to that section. I'm going down there. Something tells me we've got more than one battle on our hands."

In the Airponics Bay, Older Kes finds the controls shut down, and the monitor screen goes blank.

Older Kes: "Computer, initiate site-to site transport program Kes beta six."
Computer: "Unable to comply. Control functions have been disabled."
Older Kes partially revives Younger Kes with a hypospray injection. Younger Kes is sluggish and does not wake fully. Older Kes sighs and tells her younger self reassuringly: "Ssh, ssh, I'm taking you home."
She revives Younger Kes enough to bring her to her feet but thereafter Younger Kes remains unconscious.

Janeway with a security team.

They meet two Vidiians. The security guards avoid, and Janeway ducks, weapons fire from the intruders. Janeway and the security guards take cover by the wall by a corridor junction. She looks out cautiously, then indicates to the security guards. She leaves them to deal with the Vidiians while she breaks cover and, firing her phaser at the Vidiians, heads away to the Airponics Bay.

Now Janeway is on her own, with no security back-up if she meets any more Vidiians!
