In the Captain's Ready Room, Janeway is looking out of the window into space. The door signal sounds. "Come in." She does not turn. The doors open. Tuvok enters. Tuvok: "You wished to see me." Janeway, in a low serious voice: "We've known each other for how long?" Tuvok: "Approximately twenty years."

Janeway: "We've served on three Starships together. I was present at your daughter's Kohlinar. I consider you one of my closest friends."
Tuvok: "And I regard you with the same esteem."

Janeway: "I've always been honest with you, but," turning toward him, "you've been keeping something from me."

Tuvok is concerned. "I don't know what you mean."

Janeway: "Don't you? It took exhaustive research," moving toward the replicator, "sifting through teraquads of data, separating fact from rumour, but eventually I arrived at the truth." Tuvok: "Captain?"

At the replicator, she turns to it and taps the controls. Something materialises. She turns with it. It is a birthday cake, with a lit candle! She breaks into a broad smile. Janeway: "Happy birthday."

Tuvok, accepting it: "Thank you." Janeway: "So, it's not long before you hit the big three digits, hmm?" Tuvok: "Indeed. Have you informed anyone else of your discovery?" Janeway: "Don't worry, Tuvok, my lips are sealed."

Janeway: "Well? You're supposed to blow out the candle." Tuvok: "That is not a Vulcan custom." Janeway: "Humour me." The com. signal sounds. Chakotay, via comms: "Captain to the Bridge."

Janeway heads for the Bridge but turns to Tuvok: "Well?" Quickly he blows out the candle. Tuvok, straight-faced: "It was a fire hazard." She smiles and they go to enter the Bridge.

The doors open and they enter the Bridge - Tuvok takes his post and Janeway goes over to Chakotay.

Chakotay reports: "We're receiving a distress call - a small vessel on an intercept course."

Janeway: "Lifesigns?" Kim: "One." Surprised as the instruments provide more detail: "It's Ocampan."

Tuvok: "We're being hailed." Audio-visual commences and the image of Kes, now old, appears on the viewscreen. (Because Ocampans from the homeworld live for 9 years on average, she has aged "more" than most humanoids.) Janeway: "Kes?"

Kes, on the viewscreen: "Captain Janeway, I need your help. Will you please give me permission to come aboard?"

Janeway: "Of course. What's happened?" Kes, on the viewscreen, sighing: "Please, let me come aboard." Janeway decides as Kes ends contact, ordering: "Prepare the docking port. Tell the Doctor to stand by."

Janeway is concerned for Kes.

Tuvok: "Her ship is accelerating. It's on a collision course."

Janeway, via comms: "Janeway to Kes. Cut your engines. You're coming in too fast." There is no response. Paris: "Five seconds 'til impact." Chakotay: "Lock on a tractor beam. Evasive maneuvers."

"Hull breach on Deck 9."

Kim: "Hull breach on Deck 9." Janeway: "Emergency forcefields." Kim: "Captain, a transporter was activated just before impact. She's beamed aboard."

As Kes walks along a corridor, setting off bulkhead explosions. This is the result of her evolved mental powers, and the reason (to protect ship and crew) why she decided to leave Voyager at the start of 2374, in [#70 The Gift].

Kim reports: "I'm reading bulkhead ruptures. Deck 11, section 17...18...19." Chakotay: "Cause?" Kim: "Unknown."

Tuvok: "I've located Kes. She's moving through those sections. She's giving off high levels of neurogenic energy." Janeway, via comms: "Janeway to Kes. Kes, respond." There is no response. Voyager judders. Kim reports the cause: "Hull breach, section 20."

Janeway: "Forcefields." She orders via comms: "Security to Deck 11!"

In that section, Kes comes upon a forcefield but her powers enable her to neutralise it.

Kim: "Forcefields are not holding." Tuvok: "She's approaching Main Engineering." Janeway, via comms: "Bridge to Engineering. Intruder alert."

In the corridor near Main Engineering, Lieutenant Ayala and another security officer challenge Kes. Ayala: "Stop where you are." She disobeys and moves forward. Ayala fires his phaser. It should stun an ordinary humanoid, but merely throws Kes back a step. She concentrates her mental energy on them and the pair are blasted backwards against the corridor wall.

They recover and take up position.

This time Kes blasts the corridor in front of them.

The explosive force slams them backwards, disabling them.
