ASHES TO ASHES : Episode 138 : Part D

Kim finds Ballard in the Messhall, eating Kobali food and looking thoughtful. Significantly she discovers that she cannot remember anything of her human father. Kim has come with a suggestion of how to fulfil number 32 on her list, "make Tuvok laugh". He tells her that Tuvok has a program of the Vulcan monastery the Temple of T'Panit and proposes that they make adjustments to it. As Ballard agrees unenthusiastically and rises, she is rooted to the spot as her body and face starts reverting back to the Kobali form.

The Doctor tells Ballard that her Kobali tissues are rejecting his treatment. In future she will have to report to him twice a day. Ballard feels frustrated - if she is in Sickbay all the time how is she expected to do her job? She bursts out with angry words...in Kobali. Afterwards, realising that she has reverted to the Kobali language, she flees.

Kim finds Ballard in her Kobali ship. He asks her to stop having the treatment.
Kim: "I don't care if you're Kobali, human or Bolian. I just want you to be happy."
Ballard: "I wouldn't fit in. ... Lindsay was part of this crew. If I stop the treatments I won't be Lindsay any more. ... Since the day I got back here I haven't felt right. First I thought it was Voyager - things had changed so much I thought that if I just gave myself time I'd get used to it. But it's me - I've changed. And the more I try to deny it the more I feel like a ghost. I'm sorry, Harry, but I can't keep fighting any more."
Kim: "What about us?"
Ballard: "The girl you were in love with died three years ago."

Q'ret returns with two more ships, and they fire on Voyager. Voyager's shields drop to 48 per cent then 20 per cent then 13 per cent.
Hail them. Tell them you'll surrender me! Don't listen to her, Captain. I appreciate the gesture, Lindsay, but I'm not giving you up. It's not a gesture. I want to go. She's not well. She doesn't know what she's saying! I know exactly what I'm saying!
Kim detects power fluctations in the lead attacking vessel's warp drive. A polaron burst could overload the core. Ballard is concerned that that would destroy the ship, but Kim says the attackers are not leaving Voyager much choice.
Janeway double-checks with Ballard: "You're sure that this is what you want?"
Chakotay intercepts Kim when he goes to fire the polaron burst himself: "Stand down, Ensign."
Kim: "We can't just let them take her!"
Ballard: "Even if you stopped them, I can't stay on Voyager."
Kim: "I don't want to lose you."
Ballard: "You already did. But at least this time we've been given the chance to say goodbye."
The Kobali ships accompany Voyager while Ballard makes her farewells.

Kim says he is sorry that she did not get to do everything on her list but Ballard replies that she managed everything that was important. They say farewell and Ballard is beamed out.

Kim gives Mezoti Ballard's hairbrush. Mezoti tells him that Seven has given them free time for them to do on the Holodeck whatever they want. They leave the Messhall to go and tweak the monks in Tuvok's monastery holoprogram.
