ASHES TO ASHES : Episode 138 : Part C

Ballard's new look, complete with a different hair colour.
"Hair is one of my specialties," says the Doctor, who has less than a full head of hair, "despite evidence to the contrary."
Ballard: "It's just too bad that beneath this beautiful red hair lies the six-lobed brain of a Kobali."
Ballard declines Kim's skating invitation - she has a date already....the Captain has invited her to dinner. Kim complains: "In six years I've never been invited to the Captain's quarters for dinner."

Dinner is an event that does not go well from start to finish. Janeway's cooking is less than perfect as she collects a liquified pot-roast from her food replicator. Ballard arrives in full-dress uniform but Janeway did not require it. Instead of pot-roast they eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Ballard asks Janeway why she sent her, Ballard, on the away mission which killed her.
Janeway: "Well, I suppose I thought you were best suited for the job."
Ballard: "No, I wasn't. Dilithium extraction was always Lieutenant Torres' specialty. And Tuvok had far more experience conducting away missions but you didn't send either one of them. Was it because they were closer to you."
Janeway: "Do you blame me?"
Ballard: "No. ... You don't understand. 'Never harbour anger towards those who brought you death for they gave you the chance to live again.' In letting me die, Captain, you gave me life!"
Overcome with awkwardness, Ballard says she should not have come and rushes out.

Ballard's nightmare: she dreams the crew attending her funeral tell her she should not have returned, and her Kobali father (called Q'ret) holds out his hand in appeal to her, calling her by her Kobali name of Jedlia.

When Ballard goes to Kim's room for comfort, Kim confesses his love for her and they kiss.

The ex-Borg children are engaged in having "fun" in the Messhall. The twins Azan and Rebi are each constructing a cube precisely 1/1000th the size of a Borg vessel. Icheb is sculpting "a 26-sided polyhedron, composed of hexagons, octagons and squares." Mezoti, who earlier accidentally squirted clay on Icheb's shoulder, has ignored Seven's instructions to create a geometric shape and made a head of Seven instead because it was more fun.
Seven: "It is crude. However it does demonstrate ingenuity and individuality."
Icheb is confused when Seven does not punish Mezoti for disobeying instructions but actually tells her to, "Resume your disorder."

A Kobali ship arrives.
"I've come for Jedlia," announces Q'ret and asks to talk to her. Janeway says that he can see Ballard if Ballard agrees and adds that the interview is over the moment Ballard says it is.

The meeting takes place in the Briefing Room. Q'ret begs Ballard to return.

Q'ret tells Ballard, "You may have altered your appearance, but do you still think like these people? Even now, the first words that come into your head, are they in their language or mine? I realise this place is familiar to you but it's not where you belong. Your sister misses you." and for a moment Ballard's face softens as she thinks of her Kobali sister Tadzia. "She keeps asking when you're coming home. What shall I tell her?"
Ballard looks at Kim, her main motivation for returning to Voyager. "Tell her that her sister's dead," she replies, and leaves.

Q'ret, with Lt Ayala behind him on guard.
Q'ret tells Janeway that he will not give Jedlia up: "She's confused. ... I don't want to fight you. ... Every life is precious to my people, Captain. I won't be coming back alone."
