ASHES TO ASHES : Episode 138 : Part B

In Ballard's quarters, she sees that Kim has carefully unpacked her belongings, folded them and presented them tidily on the bed for her. He had saved her possessions - Tuvok had wanted to recycle everything.
Ballard: "My skates and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
Then she scoops up her clothes throws them untidily into the drawer. She draws the contrast between them: she calls him obsessive, he says he is "tidy". She asks, "Is that why you used to request baryon sweeps of your dorm room?"

[The number on the storage canister is 0928.]

Kim says he gave the eulogy at her funeral - he told people of her motto, "Own the day".

She throws her hairbrush aside, saying she will not be needing it now (as Kobali have no head hair).

The Doctor can treat Ballard so that she will be human again, but in appearance only. He begins the treatment.

In the Messhall Neelix prepares Jibalian berry salad for Ballard - number 6 on her list. She has been looking forward to it; the Kobali eat the same grey paste all the time. But when she tries some of the berry salad she says, "It doesn't taste the same," and has a metallic flavour. Kim tries some and says it tastes normal to him. Ballard reckons she still has Kobali tastebuds. She rushes off to carry out number 16 on her list: "Dazzle Lieutenant Torres."

Torres notes that Ballard arrives for duty one minute early. Ballard succeeds in dazzling her when she rectifies an alignment error in the dilithium matrix. The Kobali have a term, pronounced "viktiote', for this particular type of wave phenomenon which translates roughly into "crumpled dance". While activating the controls, Ballard speaks Kobali out loud to herself, drawing the attention of nearby crewmembers. She feels awkward until Torres asks her to examine the warp-core for a few "crumpled dances".

In Astrometrics, Seven asks Chakotay to be relieved of responsibility as guardian to the ex-Borg children.
Seven: "Their behaviour is chaotic. My attempts to apply discipline only result in further disorder."
Chakotay: "Well, kids and disorder usually go hand in hand."
Seven: "Neelix issued with a similar warning prior to my taking this assignment, which is why I devised an activity schedule to promote focus and unity. 0700 the children emerge from their alcoves. Nutrients are ingested in the Messhall prior to proceeding to the Science Lab to begin classes. At 1300 hours nutrients are consumed a second time before reporting to the Holodeck where they're studying comparative alien physiology."
Chakotay: "Doesn't sound like there's much time for fun."
Seven: "On the contrary. I've scheduled recreational activities."
Chakotay: "You can't always schedule fun, Seven. Sometimes it needs to be spontaneous."
Seven: "According to my research children require structure."
Chakotay: "I agree but not to this extreme. You're treating them like they're still on a Borg cube."
Seven: "You're comparing me to the Collective."
Chakotay: "You have all four children functioning as one. They do the same things together at the same time."
Seven: "So that each child has the same opportunities to learn."
Chakotay: "They're individuals. Maybe they're rebelling because you don't let them express themselves."
Chakotay denies her request and leaves.

Paris catches up with Kim, who is carrying skates, in the corridor en route to Sickbay. He wonders if Kim is going to try his hockey program, but Kim says he is taking Ballard skating. Paris observes that Kim and Ballard have been spending a lot of time together lately and he surmises Kim's romantic feelings for her.
Paris: "Now let's see. For those of us keeping score, Harry Kim has fallen for a hologram, a Borg, the wrong twin, and now the dearly departed."
Kim: "We're friends."
Paris: "Just like before."
Kim: "Alright, maybe there was a time when I thought of pursuing Lindsay, but I closed the door on that."
Paris: "Mmm. Don't look now, but that door is creeping open."
