HEROES AND DEMONS : Episode 12

Part E   Part E

In the king's hall, Unferth presents Hrothgar with the talisman he stole. "Here, Sire."
The Doctor pushes open the doors. He strides in and stands in front of the king. "My lord. You know me as a true warrior. You know I am the one hope you have to rid your kingdom of Grendel. That talisman will aid me in my conquest. I must have it."
Unferth to Hrothgar and the listening warriors: "Do not listen to him. He has already killed Freya." There are dark mutterings among the warriors at this.
At the lie the Doctor's expression turns particularly grim. He seizes a flaming torch and advances on Unferth, who backs away.

But Unferth's escape is baulked by the table. Faced with the threat of fire, Unferth shows himself to be a coward. "Stop him, my lord!" calls Unferth. "He is a madman."

The Doctor corners Unferth
The Doctor holds Freya's sword to Unferth's throat. "The only reason you won't die is that I've taken an oath to do no harm."
He holds his hand out for the talisman and is given it back.

Holding the sample container, the Doctor steps toward the hall doors. He calls: "Grendel! I'm ready for you."

At once Grendel streams through the hall doors toward the Doctor.
The frightened but curious warriors fall back.
The Doctor addresses Grendel: "I don't know if you can understand me, but watch! I'm setting this one free." He takes the lid off the sample container.
Immediately the lifeform within rushes out of the container and is absorbed by the larger lifeform. "There's no need for any more of this. Please, we ask you to return our crew." The lifeform goes.
On the Bridge, Torres reports: "Captain, the photonic lattice has re-appeared."
Janeway: "Scanners, all sensors."
Torres: "I'm reading a massive particle surge on our holodeck."
Paris: "The lattice is gone again."
The com. alert sounds. The Doctor says, via comms: "Holodeck to bridge."
Janeway, via comms: "Go ahead, Doctor. What is it?"

Doctor, via comms: "We have them back, Captain, all three of them." He is looking at Chakotay, Tuvok and Kim.
Janeway, via comms: "Good work, Doctor."

Kim, who is dressed as Beowulf: "Yeah, good work. Would you mind telling me where I was?"

Janeway: "Captain's log, stardate 48710.5. Since the return of our missing crewmen we've been unable to locate any further traces of the photonic aliens."

Janeway is in Sickbay discussing his mission in the 'Beowulf' holoprogram.
Doctor: "I don't know if the being understood language or just my behaviour. It would've been interesting to pursue the relationship further."

Janewy: "It's one of the most exciting aspects of space exploration - meeting new species, establishing communication, sharing differences and similarities."
Doctor: "I'm sorry none of that happened this time."
Janewy: "But it did. It just didn't happen in very predictable ways. We did, if you think about it. We entered into conflict, communicated and eventually established a peace treaty with them."
Janeway: "I'm placing a special commendation in the logs for exemplary performance by the Chief Medical Officer during his first away mission."
Doctor: "Thank you."
Janewy: "I'd like to cite you by name. Kes tells me you've chosen one. Is that true?"
Doctor: "I had, but I'm not sure I want to keep it. The last time I heard that name spoken was a rather painful one. I don't think I want to be reminded."
Janewy: "Sounds like you had quite an adventure on that holodeck, Doctor."
Doctor: "Yes, I would say so."
Janewy: "Well, something tells me you haven't had your last one."
