Episode 120 (Season 5) and Episode 121 (Season 6)
Part K

Lessing, handcuffed, sitting in a chair in a cargo bay.

Lessing is faced by a grim Janeway, watched by Chakotay.
Janeway: "I want Ransom's tactical status. I want it now, Mr Lessing."
Lessing: "Or what? You'll hit me?"
Janeway: "No, Crewman. I'll drop the shields around this room and let your little friends come pay you a visit."
Lessing: "That would be murder."
Janeway: "You could also call it poetic justice."
Lessing to Chakotay: "I suppose the plan is that you're going to come to my rescue now, right?"
Chakotay: "There's no plan as far as I know. The Captain's on her own."
Janeway: "Ransom's status, NOW."
Lessing: "No way in hell."

Janeway: "We all make our own hell, Mr Lessing, and I hope you enjoy yours. audio clip The comm. is active. We'll be outside if you have a change of heart."
Janeway and Chakotay leave for the corridor outside.

Janeway activates the controls on the wall panel.
Chakotay challenges her. "What are you doing?!"
Janeway: "Weren't you listening?"
Chakotay: "Don't do this."
Janeway: "He'll break."

In the cargo bay, Lessing hears a fissure beginning to open.

Tuvok, via comms: "Bridge to the Captain. We've lost shields in Section 29 alpha."
Janeway, via comms: "I know. Stand by."

Chakotay: "He's a loyal officer. He's not going to betray his Captain. Put up the shields!"
Janeway, with icy resolution: "He'll break."

Chakotay: "Captain!"
Janeway: "As you were!"

Chakotay presses buttons on the wall panel but the computer responds: "Level 9 authorisation required."

Chakotay: "Damn it, Kathryn!"
Janeway: "You're panicking. He's going to talk."
Tuvok, via comms: "Captain, a fissure is opening in that section."
Janeway, via comms: "Understood."

Chakotay draws his phaser, presses the controls on the wall-panel by the cargo bay to open the doors soundcargo bay doors and charges inside. He fires a phaser at the opening spatial fissure, forcing it to close.

He hauls a shaken Lessing out of the room and flings him against the wall: "Right, you've proved your loyalty to your captain. Fine. Now let's talk about the Ankari!"

Without a word, Janeway walks away.

In the Briefing Room, although Janeway is there, she stands apart from the rest of those of the senior staff who are present, while Chakotay briefs them on the new plan.
Torres: "If there's an Ankari vessel less than two light-years from here, why haven't we detected it?"
Chakotay: "Apparently they use a unique form of propulsion which makes them hard to find."
Paris: "You think they'll be willing to help us?"
Chakotay: "It's worth a try. Mr Lessing has agreed to show you how to adjust the sensors. Once you find the Ankari ship, set a course."
Paris: "Aye, sir."

Equinox EMH: "Did our prisoner disclose any other information?"
Chakotay: "I'm afraid not. The rest of you, continue with repairs. Dismissed."
Everyone leaves except himself and Janeway.

Janeway: "Commander. Alright, we're going to try it your way. But I want to make one thing clear-"
Chakotay interrupts: "Our first priority is to get Ransom. If there's one thing you've made clear it's that."
Janeway: "We've had our disagreements, Chakotay, but you've never openly opposed me."
Chakotay: "You almost killed that man today."
Janeway: "It was a calculated risk and I took it."
Chakotay: "It was a bad call."
Janeway: "I'll note your objection in my log."
Chakotay: "I don't give a damn about your log! This isn't about rules and regulations. It's about right and wrong. audio clipshort And I'm warning you: I won't let you cross that line again."
Janeway: "Well then, you leave me no choice. You're hereby relieved of duty until further notice."

Chakotay: "What's happened to you, Kathryn?"
Janeway: "I was about to ask you the same question."
She leaves.

USS Voyager finds and pursues the Ankari starship, tries to make contact.

Tuvok: "They're not responding."
Janeway: "Tractor beam."
Tuvok: "Captain, the Ankari ship has done nothing-"
Janeway: "Just do it!"

She notices that Kim, like Tuvok, has reservations about their actions.
Kim: "We're being hailed."
Janeway: "On screen."
The Ankari commander's image appears on the main viewscreen. He is not friendly: "Starfleet."
Janeway: "Yes."
Ankari commander, on viewscreen: "Leave us alone. There's nothing of value on our ship."
Janeway: "We need your guidance. Your 'spirits of good fortune' are attacking us."
Ankari commander, on viewscreen: "Of course they are! You've been killing them!"
Janeway: "We are not the ones responsible."
Ankari commander, on viewscreen: "Equinox."
Janeway: "That's right. Can you communicate with the aliens?"
Ankari commander, on viewscreen: "Release my ship."
Janeway: "I can't do that, not until you agree to talk to them."
Ankari commander, on viewscreen: "I will summon them, but you must talk to them. You must convince them." audio: viewscreen offviewscreen off

In Voyager's cargo bay, the Ankari commander uses a summoning device to summon the aliens, the 'spirits of good fortune'.

Nucleogenic lifeforms arrive.

They fly around the cargo bay.

Ankari commander: "They say they want the humans to die."
Tuvok: "A difficult place to start a negotiation."
Janeway: "Will they understand me?"
Ankari commander: "Yes."
Janeway: "We didn't do this to you. We're trying to stop the humans who did."
Ankari commander: "They don't believe you would harm your own kind."
Janeway: "We have rules for behaviour. The Equinox has broken those rules by killing your species. It's our duty to stop them."
Ankari commander: "'Give us the Equinox! Give us the Equinox!' They insist on destroying the ones responsible."
Tuvok: "We will punish them, according to our own rules. They will be imprisoned. They will lose their freedom."
Janeway steps forward and shouts to the aliens: "Alright! If you stop your attacks, I'll deliver the Equinox to you!"

Tuvok: "Captain-"
Janeway: "I know what I'm doing, Tuvok."
Tuvok: "These beings would destroy Captain Ransom and his crew."
Janeway to the Ankari commander: "What's their answer?"
Tuvok: "Your behaviour is irrational. We could find another solution-"
Janeway: "I've already confined my First Officer to quarters. Would you like to join him?" To the Ankari commander: "Well?"
Ankari commander: "They agree."

On the Equinox bridge Burke informs Ransom: "We're going to need more fuel. We've only got enough left to jump another 500 light-years."
Ransom: "'Fuel' - is that the euphemism we're using now? You mean we need to kill more lifeforms."
Burke goes past him, saying casually: "Several more."

Ransom visits the Doctor for a progress report on his surgery on Seven. He finds the Doctor and Seven engaged in singing a macabre duet of 'Clementine'.

Doctor, singing: "Oh, my darling, Oh, my darling, Oh, my darling-"

Seven, singing: "Clementine."

Ransom demands of the Doctor: "How much longer?"
Doctor: "Another hour, maybe less."
Ransom, referring to the singing: "What are you doing?""
Doctor: "Her auditory processor. We used to practise duets together. In fact, I taught her this old chestnut." They carry on the duet. Singing: "Light she was and like a fairy."
Seven, singing: "And her shoes were Number Nine."
Doctor, singing: "Herring boxes without topses."
Seven, singing: "Sandals were for Clementine."
Doctor: "Drove she ducklings to the water-"

Ransom steps right up to the Doctor. "Enough!"
Doctor: "Why the long face, Captain? You're about to get your crew home. She tried to stand in your way. You had no choice."
Ransom: "No choice. Thank you, Doctor."

As Ransom is about to leave, the Doctor says to him, stopping him in the doorway: "When this is all over, perhaps you'll allow me to teach you my repertoire. I'm going to need a new partner."
Ransom leaves without a word about the Doctor's casual attitude to the murder he is about to commit.

Ransom puts on his synaptic stimulator, but again he finds a female figure in the Tenkaran coast vista. He approaches her. She turns. It is Seven!
Ransom: "You! What are you doing here?"
Seven: "Hiding, like you."
Ransom: "I'm not hiding."

Seven looks round: "It's beautiful. I can see why this brings you comfort."
Ransom: "I don't know what you're talking about."
Seven: "But it isn't real."
Ransom: "You're not real. Now leave me alone."

Seven: "It's not too late to stop."
Ransom: "I don't have a choice."
Seven: "Find another way."

Ransom: "There is no other way."
Seven: "Stop trying to hide."
Ransom: "I told you: I'm not hiding! Now get away from me!"
Seven: "End this."
Ransom: "No!"

Ransom is startled and greatly agitated when the projection of Seven turns into one of the aliens and snarls at him. He tears off the synaptic stimulator.

As he sits there, coming to terms with what he has experienced, Burke contacts him via the comms. audio: comms. signalcomms. signal "Bridge to Ransom."

Burke: "Janeway's found us."
Ransom: "On my way."
