An hour later, Seven enters the Sickbay. There is no sign of the Doctor.

Seven: "Computer, locate the Emergency Medical Hologram." Computer: "The EMH is inactive." Seven: "Activate him."

He comes online. Doctor: "Please state the nature of the medical emergency."

Seven: "I'm here to assist you as I agreed. I've run a preliminary diagnostic of your program. Your suspicions were correct." Doctor: "I never asked you to run a diagnostic. Suspicions? What are you talking about?" Seven: "You don't recall speaking to me in the Astrometrics Lab one hour ago?" Doctor: "No. The last I remember I was completing the yearly physicals."

Seven: "You mentioned a neurosurgery you performed on Ensign Kim 18 months ago." Doctor: "Computer, locate the holoscans I took of Ensign Kim this morning. Any operation would show up-" Computer: "Unavailable. That file has been deleted."

Doctor: "Let's have a look at my program." Seven calls up the data on the monitor. "A deletion in your short term memory buffer." Doctor: "Our chat in Astrometrics never got filed. That's why I can't remember it. Hmm, if I were given to paranoia I'd say someone is trying to keep me from finding out what happened 18 months ago."

He sees his holo-camera and an idea occurs to him. "My photo album." Seven: "Doctor?" Doctor: "I was quite a shutterbug back then. Not a day went by when I didn't record an image for posterity. Let's have a walk down memory lane. Meet me on Holodeck 2."

Holodeck 2. Doctor: "Computer, display all holo-images taken on Stardate 50979." Computer: "Those holo-images have been deleted." Doctor: "Deleted? By whom?" Computer: "Unknown." Seven, operating controls at the console: "I'm detecting residual photons in the holo-buffer. It may be possible to partially reconstruct the images." Doctor: "Try." Seven: "I've restored five images. They are degraded but intact."

Doctor: "Let's see them." The first picture is displayed. "The Messhall."

Seven: "Do you remember this?" Doctor: "No. Who is that? The Ensign. It seems to be her birthday." Seven: "I've never seen her before."

Doctor: "The Ensign again. I never went on a shuttle mission with Harry Kim, and certainly not with her."

Another image displays. "And again!"

The next image shows an unknown alien ship through the front window of the shuttlecraft.

The last image shows an alien pointing a weapon at the shuttlecraft crew!

Medical lab. Seven: "I've isolated your memory files from Stardate 50979."

Doctor: "They weren't deleted?" Seven: "No." Doctor: "Then why can't I remember them?" Seven: "The program was rewritten to deny you access to those memories. I'm trying to restore them."

Janeway: "Hear, hear." Gathered crew: "Hear, hear!"

Doctor, about to take a holophoto: "Say 'cheese'." Crew: "Cheese."

The Doctor, experiencing the fragmented memories.

The crew are holding a birthday party for the Mystery Ensign.

Seven: "What happened?"
Doctor: "I was in the Messhall."
Seven: "The files are difficult to localise. The memories will be out of sequence."

Kim: "What was that?" Mystery Ensign: "Our sensors are dead."

The Doctor experiences only a second or two of each of the fragments of memories, but enough to realise he was on a shuttlecraft when a hostile alien boarded.

Kim: "Make a wish."
Doctor: "They've stopped."
Seven: "One moment." She adjusts the controls and the fragmented memories resume.
Kim: "Make a wish."

Mystery Ensign: "I'm going to kill you."

A coffin is fired from Voyager, as seen on the main viewscreen of the Bridge.

Doctor: "Ensign, I haven't seen you in months." Mystery Ensign: "The price I pay for staying in good health, I guess."

Paris: "Acetylcholine, 25 microlitres. It's not helping. I'm getting massive synaptic failure." Doctor: "This doesn't make any sense."

The Mystery Ensign enters the Messhall with Neelix.

Aboard the shuttlecraft, the Doctor realises the Mystery Ensign is critically injured.

On the shuttlecraft, Kim, through a fixed smile: "This is the last one." Doctor: "Say 'cheese'." Kim and Mystery Ensign: "Cheese."

The Mystery Alien opens fire....

....with a tri-part blast at the shuttle crew!

The memories end. The Doctor tells Seven grimly: "Call the Captain."

In the Briefing Room, the senior staff look at the holo-images that Seven managed to retrieve.

Janeway: "I don't recognise this species. Seven?" Seven: "They're unknown to the Borg."

Tuvok: "Perhaps these images have been manipulated." He and Janeway exchange a look.

Doctor: "No, they're real. The image buffer would've shown signs of tampering. I have a different theory. I believe there was an attack on Voyager by this species, and all our memories of the event were erased. This is the unknown crewman I told you about - Ensign Jetal. The question is, who was she? An alien intruder posing as a Starfleet Ensign? Of course, it's impossible to tell from a photograph, but one thing is certain - we are in immediate danger."

Tuvok: "How so?" Doctor: "Only a few hours ago, as I was beginning this investigation, someone shut down my program and eliminated all my memories of the last 24 hours."

Seven: "An intruder may be on board."

Janeway: "Run a deck by deck security sweep." Tuvok: "Understood." Janeway to Seven: "Report to the Astrometrics Lab and recalibrate the sensors. See if you can detect any cloaked vessels nearby." Seven leaves.

Doctor: "I'll review the medical records of the crew. Ensign Kim may not have been the only one who was injured during the attack." Janeway: "No, I want you to de-activate yourself for now. We'll erect a security field around the main computer and encrypt all pathways leading to your program. If someone does try to tamper with you again I want to be ready." Doctor: "Captain-" Janeway: "It's for your own safety, Doctor. Thank you for bringing this to my attention." Doctor: "You will keep me informed?" Janeway: "Absolutely. Dismissed."

After the Doctor leaves, Janeway and Tuvok exchange another look.
