DOCTOR'S LOG:

The Doctor attended a medical symposium, accompanied by Janeway. He pilots the Delta Flyer on the return journey. He says: "As a hologram, I can handle a variety of tasks at once. In addition to piloting the Flyer I'm writing a paper on the physiological stresses of long-duration space flight and taking holo-images of this Mutara-class nebula." They are intercepted by two renegade Hierarchy aliens named Zet and Nar who hold Janeway hostage and order the Doctor to steal Voyager's warp core so that they can sell it. To save Janeway's life, the Doctor reluctantly complies, not only obeying their instructions but using his initiative to keep the crew from interfering with the theft. The aliens are able to keep a continual check on his progress as they are monitoring his perceptual subroutines. As part of the theft, the Doctor accesses Voyager's holodeck database and is able to masquerade as various members of the crew - as Janeway he orders Torres to configure the Delta Flyer's tractor emitters to generate a resonance pulse to stabilise the warp core's containment field while it is being towed, and as Janeway the Doctor renders both Chakotay then Kim unconscious when their suspicions threaten to expose him. He keeps their bodies in the ship's morgue. Zet becomes curious about Voyager's bioneural circuitry and so, as per Zet's latest order, the Doctor masquerades as Torres and steals spare bioneural gel packs from Locker Gamma 5 on the upper deck of Engineering. The Doctor takes internal sensors offline and evades pursuit by the crew who are now onto him. The Doctor departs for the Hierarchy vessel in the Delta Flyer with the warp core in tow, leaving Voyager without main power or of course warp drive. When main power is restored, the Doctor's piano rendition of "The Blue Danube" (Johann Strauss' "On The Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz") but with deliberate wrong notes is heard on every com. channel throughout the ship. Seven performs a Fourier analysis on the recording and the crew realise the harmonics have been modified to look like a warp signature. Paris and Tuvok takes a shuttle to follow the Doctor's clue and find the Hierarchy vessel. Meanwhile the Doctor insists Zet and Nar release Janeway in return for the warp core but is re-captured instead. Zet has a new task for the Doctor whom he now considers the more valuable of the two prisoners. Zet has Nar add extra holographic templates and subroutines to the Doctor's program to enable him to penetrate Hierarchy headquarters to steal data worth a hundred warp cores. But the Doctor's program becomes overloaded and starts to malfunction. When the Doctor is left in the holding cell with Janeway she scolds him for co-operating with the aliens. She tries to amplify his matrix to disrupt the forcefield keeping them in the cell. As she does so the two discuss having more social contact with each other. At this point Paris and Tuvok arrive, and Paris takes control of the Delta Flyer. They jointly attack the Hierarchy vessel. Zet jettisons the stolen warp core intending to detonate it as a cover for escape although Nar is horrified - the detonation would kill the attackers. The attack also disables the holding cell's forcefield such that Janeway and the Doctor are able to escape from it. The Doctor tackles Zet, and Nar comes to the aid of…..not Zet but the Doctor. After the Doctor, Janeway and the away team return to Voyager with the warp core, Torres sets about stabilising the Doctor's matrix and purging the extraneous subroutines from his program. But he fears he is about to decompile permanently and makes several deathbed confessions by way of final farewell to his friends, including revealing to a surprised Seven that he is in love with her. But then Torres succeeds in saving his program, ensuring a long life for the highly embarrassed Doctor. See DOCTOR'S QUOTE for his deathbed confession in full.

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

Deathbed confession: To Janeway: "…..when you reach Earth, I want you to donate my emitter to the Daystrom Institute. They may be able to replicate it someday, so that other holograms can know the freedom I've enjoyed. I've had something on my conscience for a long time. After I was first activated, I kept a record of what I considered to be your most questionable command decisions. It's in my personal database. I hope you'll delete the file without reading it." To Tuvok: "Mr Tuvok, I violated the most sacred trust between a physician and his patient. I told Mr Neelix about the cutaneous eruption you developed on your……that was indiscreet. I hope you can forgive me." To Kim: "Ensign, at your recital last month, I told Lieutenant Torres that your saxophone playing reminded me of a wounded targ. I should have put it more delicately, I'm sorry." To Seven: "Seven, you have no idea how difficult it's been hiding my true feelings all these years, averting my eyes during your regular maintenance exams. I know you could never have the same feelings for me, but I want you to know the truth - I love you, Seven."
