MEDICAL LOGS
HUMAN ERROR
Season 7 : Episode 164
DOCTOR'S LOG:
The Doctor sings the tune of the lullaby "Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top" with different lyrics (it is not clear if they are his own invention): "Rock-a-bye baby, in the space dock. When the core blows, the shuttle will rock. When the hull breaks, the shuttle will fall. And down will come baby, shuttle and all." The Doctor's gift to Torres at her baby shower is a recording of him singing 29 lullabies, including a couple of Klingon songs. His favourite is one which translates as "Sleep, Little Warrior!" The Doctor has been teaching Seven to play the piano. While she is technically perfect, holo-Chakotay encourages her to play without the metronome ticking and play with feeling.
MEDICAL REPORT:
When Seven collapses in the holodeck, the Doctor attends the emergency. That she has created a holoprogram of Chakotay whom she is romancing is something which the Doctor will keep confidential as part of patient-doctor confidentiality. The Doctor informs her: "What you experienced was no malfunction. Your cortical node was designed to shut down your higher brain functions when you achieve a certain level of emotional stimulation. It appears to be a fail-safe mechanism to deactivate drones who start to regain their emotions. Knowing the Borg, it makes perfect sense. Finding one's heart is the surest road to finding one's individuality." Although Seven is no longer connected to the Hive mind, the technology is built into her node and has simply remained dormant until now. The Doctor has been thinking about a way to reconfigure the micro-circuitry, but it would entail multiple surgeries and the recovery might be difficult. Seven refuses the treatment. After this episode the Doctor starts working to improve the surgical technique - this is noted in
[#171 and #172 Endgame].
DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
When Seven says her personal life is a distraction: "It's supposed to be a distraction! You simply have to find the right balance between work and recreation."
