SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME
Season 5 : Episode 116
DOCTOR'S LOG:
While taking upon himself the tutoring of Seven in courtship rituals as part of her social lessons (the social lessons began in
[#84 Prey]), the Doctor starts by presenting a holographic slideshow on procreation. She cuts it short.

He then takes her to the holoprogram Chez Sandrine's for a practical lesson. There he instructs her to practice making small talk with men. Seven talks with a holographic prospective suitor in her usual no-nonsense manner. Once Paris learns what is going on, he makes a bet with the Doctor that Seven cannot find a date for the Kadi ambassador's reception and keep that date for the entire night.

Knowing he has his work cut out for him, the Doctor tries to show Seven the importance of shared interests with a potential date. When he discovers Seven has a beautiful singing voice, the two engage in a duet of "You Are My Sunshine". While singing it, he realises that he has developed romantic feelings for her but, disconcerted, he conceals them. Seven is surprised to learn from the Doctor's assistance that her interests include astronomy, quantum mechanics and music.

Seven peruses the ship's manifest for a suitable male and asks a startled Lieutenant William Chapman for a dinner date in the Chez Sandrine holoprogram. The Doctor helps Seven loosen and arrange her hair and he chooses her a dress to wear. He explains that when he designed Seven's dermaplastic garment, he also designed some casual attire for her.

In the holodeck simulation, the Doctor plays the piano as Seven and Chapman awkwardly deal with a lobster dinner and take a turn on the dance floor. When Seven takes the lead and tears a ligament in Chapman's arm, the evening is cut short as the Doctor, after scanning Chapman with a medical tricorder, sends him to Sickbay with a request not to tell Paris how it happened (a request Chapman ignores).

The Doctor asks Seven to attend the Kadi ambassador's reception as his date, where Seven displays her newly learned social skills. This prompts Paris to admit the Doctor has won the bet, but he does so in Seven's presence. Angrily she accuses the Doctor of not having a sincere interest in her development and storms out of the party.

| Paris to the Doctor: "I've got to admit it, you've done wonders. Alright, you win." Seven: "You made a wager regarding me? Clarify." Doctor: "It's not what you think." Seven: "Clearly I am not the only one who requires social lessons." | |
Meanwhile, Neelix, assigned by Janeway to look after the Kadi ambassador, has lost control over his charge who drinks too much, makes offensive advances to Seven as she leaves, and makes a scene before passing out. In Sickbay, the Doctor tells Neelix that the enzymes which break down synthehol are not present in the Kadi bloodstream. Even though the Kadi have rules against medical procedures which have not been sanctified, in view of the catalogue of rule infringements and the need to sober up the ambassador before the return the next morning of Janeway and the ambassador's superior, Neelix agrees that the Doctor should attempt to code a sample of Seven's Borg nanoprobes to assimilate the synthehol molecules. As the Doctor works on the procedure, he apologises to Seven and they realise they have become good friends.

Using a holographic simulation, the Doctor prepares to tell Seven about his feelings for her, but she comes to him first to thank him for his guidance and announces that she will no longer require his lessons because there is not a suitable mate on board. She gives him a gift by way of thanks - a tricorder with an enhanced scanning resolution, something which the Doctor had expressed a wish for. He gratefully receives the gift. But, crushed by her lack of romantic interest in him, the Doctor hides his true emotions and returns to the Chez Sandrine holoprogram where, all alone, he gives a lonely piano rendition of "Someone To Watch Over Me".

the Doctor rehearses with a hologram of Seven: "These past few days have been unforgettable. You've brought light into my life, Seven. It's as if you've become a part of my program. When we're apart, I, I feel like I'm missing a subroutine. I, I don't expect you to reciprocate, but I wanted you to know how I feel." When the real Seven arrives, he terminates the holoprogram and both holo-Seven and the holo-Cargobay 2 go offline
MEDICAL REPORT:
The Doctor attends Chapman on the holodeck, scans him with a medical tricorder, diagnoses a torn ligament in the upper part of his arm and sends him to be treated by Paris in Sickbay.
The Doctor reports on the drunken Kadi ambassador, saying that the enzymes which break down synthehol are not present in the Kadi bloodstream. Seven suggests and Neelix agrees a way of sobering up the ambassador as quickly as possible. Accordingly the Doctor extracts some of Seven's Borg nanoprobes and proceeds to encode them to assimilate the synthehol molecules. The next morning the Kadi ambassador has an almighty hangover but he is able to meet Janeway and his superior when they arrive on Voyager, and between them he and Neelix cover up the incident.
DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
To Paris: "Mr Neelix is hosting a reception for the Kadi Ambassador on Thursday night. Not only will Seven arrive with a date, she will have him eating out of the palm of her hand."
