THE FIGHT
Season 5 : Episode 113

MEDICAL REPORT:

While in a holographic boxing program, Chakotay is distracted by an unusual sight and is knocked out by his opponent. Chakotay's boxing injuries include oedema beneath the anterior fossa of the cranium and a hairline fracture of the septum. What he saw was the effect of Voyager being pulled into Chaotic Space. Chaotic Space is two light years across, emits enough energy for a dozen stars, and it shifts position every few minutes and does not match any phenomena in Voyager's database, but the Borg have been aware of the phenomenon for years and call it Chaotic Space as it is a randomly appearing zone where the laws of physics are in flux. Gravimetric shears may destroy the ship unless they can find a way out of the disturbance. Chakotay begins hallucinating and hearing voices calling to him from the boxing ring. When he swings at Tuvok, he is subdued and taken to Sickbay. Voyager locates a ship adrift with no lifesigns aboard. Its last distress call reveals that its captain began hallucinating just like Chakotay. The Doctor surmises Chakotay has a genetic marker for a cognitive disorder disorder known as sensory tremens. The primary symptoms are visual and auditory hallucinations. His family doctor suppressed the gene before he was born. The nucleotide resonance frequency activated Chakotay's DNA and realigned his molecular bonds. A number of ganglia in his visual cortex are hyperactive due to the alien contact. With the Doctor's help, Chakotay starts piecing together the alien instructions he is receiving. His fear of losing control almost causes him to block out the voices, but the Doctor convinces him he must give in to them.

Chakotay: "Get them out!"   Doctor: "Commander, can you hear me? Focus on the sound of my voice."   Chakotay: "I can't understand them. They won't stop talking!"   Doctor: "What are they saying?"   Chakotay: "I don't know! Make them stop, please!"

Doctor: "The aliens are trying to speak to you, and the only thing keeping you from understanding them is your own fear, your fear of losing control, your fear of the unknown."   Chakotay: "The unknown. And I don't want to know!"   Doctor: "But we have to know or we're all going to die! Allow yourself to hear them for just a few moments. Do it for us!"

Once the aliens who live in Chaotic Space tell him how to modify the deflector, using terms he does not understand (to leave they must alter their warp field to a rentrillic projectory and modify their deflector to induce a paralateral rentrillic property), Chakotay carries out the directions on the Bridge as the graviton shear quickly increases. Suddenly, Voyager's sensors set the correct course, and the ship is returned to normal space.

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

To Chakotay after treating him for a boxing injury: "You'd like that, a manly scar above your eye - Chakotay, the Maquis Mauler. Pointless violence. That program shouldn't even be in our database."
