COURSE: OBLIVION
Season 5 : Episode 112

This episode's events centre around the duplicate 'silver blood' crew created at the end of click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#92 Demon]. Crew references, including to "the Doctor", are therefore to the duplicates.

DOCTOR'S LOG:

The Doctor attends the wedding of Paris and Torres.

MEDICAL REPORT:

Torres suddenly becomes violently ill. When Paris brings her to Sickbay, they find several more crew members in the same condition. The Doctor diagnoses Torres with acute cellular degradation and explains that her chromosomes are breaking down at the molecular level due to a reaction with the newly installed enhanced warp drive (a design which should get them home to the Alpha Quadrant in two years). Meanwhile, Chakotay and Tuvok pinpoint an event that could have caused their problems. Ten months ago, while on a Class-Y demon planet in the Vaskan sector, they had encountered a biomimetic compound that had experienced sentience for the first time upon contact with the crew. Before they left, the crew's DNA was copied by the living compound and duplicates of themselves remained on the planet creating a new population. With this information at their disposal the Doctor injects a dichromate catalyst into Torres's body and she disintegrates into the mimetic compound. After witnessing the reaction, Chakotay and Tuvok realise that they and the rest of the crewmembers are in fact the crew of duplicates.

Torres reverts to her true form

the Doctor is shocked at seeing Torres' true form

Right: Doctor: "Behold the primordial soup. It's a bio-mimetic compound that duplicated the crew's molecular structure so precisely that I would never have detected it if I hadn't known what to look for."

The only solution seems to be to set course for that Demon-class planet which it seems is the only place the crew can survive. But Janeway insists on forging ahead toward the "home" she remembers in the Alpha Quadrant. The Doctor advises finding the original Janeway, sampling her DNA and imprinting it onto the (duplicate) Janeway's (and by extension, this would be the cure for them all) (see DOCTOR'S QUOTE). En route they are prevented from landing on another Demon-class planet. Chakotay tells her they are questioning her command. The crew is beginning to remember their existence before Voyager and that Earth is not their home.

After Chakotay's neural pathways start to destabilise and he dies in Sickbay, Janeway alters course for the original Demon planet.

After her death, acting Captain Kim continues the mission as the few survivors try to hold the ship together. They detect a ship but are unable to contact it while in warp. Kim orders Seven to eject the warp core so that they can drop out of warp and hail the ship. But the force is too great, and the ship disintegrates. The real Voyager comes across the mysterious debris, curious about the distress signal they received and they can only make a note of the event in their log.

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

Duplicate Doctor to duplicate Janeway: "I've tried everything I can think of: bio-molecular enhancers, gene splicing with replicated DNA, and I'm no closer to finding a cure. But I do have an idea. Find the original Voyager. If the real Captain Janeway were here, we could sample her DNA and imprint it onto your mimetic pattern."
