MEDICAL REPORT:

Torres is admitted to Sickbay after being found unconscious in a holodeck simulation of the Delta Flyer, a shuttlecraft in the process of being built and tested. Janeway informs Torres that the Doctor found evidence of internal bleeding, fractured vertebrae, contusions, and cranial trauma which are weeks and months old. Torres had been treating herself but with amateur skill. The Doctor believes that she is suffering from clinical depression.

Doctor: "You had an accident on the Holodeck."    Torres: "How long was I out?"    Doctor: "Almost 12 hours."

Chakotay's research elicits the fact that Torres began running dangerous holosimulations, with the safety protocols off, after he received and reported to her the letter from the Alpha Quadrant informing him of the slaughter of the remaining Maquis (he received the letter in  [#83 Hunters]). When Chakotay confronts her, Torres admits she has been testing herself, trying to experience emotion or feel pain.
