MEDICAL REPORT:

Kellin, an injured Ramuran female, is rescued from her damaged ship and treated in Sickbay for a minor concussion and a compound tibula fracture.

Doctor: "When I scan her the readings won't stay in the database. Luckily I'm a master of visual diagnosis. She has a minor concussion and a compound tibula fracture. Nothing life-threatening. I can repair the damage."

She is a tracer, a kind of bounty-hunter. Her job which entails hunting fugitives from Ramura, altering their minds using a neurolytic emitter so that they wish to return and returning them. A tracer never goes home empty-handed, as the disgrace would be too great. The Ramuran tracers often work secretly aboard alien ships and insert a virus into the ships' computers to erase record of their visits, which means that Sickbay's records contain no mention of Kellin's medical treatment. The physiology of the Ramurans themselves is such that their bodies produce a sort of pheromone which blocks the long-term memory engrams of others, which means no one ever remembers them for more than a few hours. They are impervious to scanning devices, having developed technology to aid in their clandestine lifestyle. The technology includes a sophisticated polarisation technique which causes sensor scans to pass right through it. Kellin confesses that she has returned to Voyager because she fell in love with Chakotay, even though he has inevitably forgotten her. They fall in love again. Curneth, another tracer, arrives to force Kellin home, and he shoots her with the neurolytic emitter. She wakes in Sickbay, and as her memories begin to fade she begs Chakotay to remind her of the love they shared once she no longer remembers. He does so but she decides to return home with Curneth.

The Doctor scans Kellin and leaves. Chakotay to Kellin: "The Doctor says there's nothing he can do. Your recent memories have already begun to fade."

MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION:

The Doctor realises that Kellin and Chakotay want to be left alone together and makes this excuse to leave: "Oh. I have several days' worth of inoculation records to catalogue. I suppose I'll get to it."

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

To Chakotay about Kellin: "I'd ask you to monitor her vital signs but since they aren't registering I suppose there's no point."
