THE OMEGA DIRECTIVE
Season 4 : Episode 89

DOCTOR'S LOG:

Voyager's sensors detect the nearby presence of Omega, Starfleet's codename for the most powreful substance known to exist which is also a highly unstable phenomenon which destroys the fabric of subspace. A chain reaction involving a handful of molecules could devastate subspace throughout an entire quadrant and make warp travel impossible. When Starfleet realised Omega's power, they suppressed all knowledge of it and the Omega Directive, which overrides even the Prime Directive, instructs captains and flag officers to take all measures to neutralise it if it is ever encountered. Janeway orders the Doctor to prepare 20 milligrammes of arithrazine, which is used for the most severe cases of theta-radiation poisoning, but without informing him (or any other crewmember) that she intends to take a modified shuttlecraft on a suicide mission to destroy Omega. The Doctor insists that a physician must be present to monitor the treatment and it is against Starfleet medical protocols to provide that much arithrazine. However the need for the medication does not arise as Chakotay persuades her to confide in the senior staff and an alternative plan to destroy Omega is devised. Seven includes in her plans for a particular day a review of Charles Dickens' social commentary novel 'A Christmas Carol', recommended by the Doctor for its educational value.

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

"Captain, I don't know what's going on here. but I'd hate this to be the last time I ever see you. Please be careful."
