THE KILLING GAME, Part 1
Season 4 : Episode 86

DOCTOR'S LOG:

The Hirogen have captured Voyager and in the last 19 days have implanted devices in the crew to make them believe they are characters within holodeck war games. The holoprograms are run with the safety protocols off. The main one is a World War II holoscenario of a village in Nazi-occupied France after D-Day anticipating the arrival of American forces. The crew's personae are those of French Resistance fighters while the Hirogen don German uniform. Alpha Hirogen envisages that understanding and using this new holotechnology will enable his scattered and dwindling race to rebuild their civilisation by hunting an endless supply of holographic prey not real prey. But his second-in-command, Turanj, resists the notion, and is impatient to complete the hunt by killing the Voyager crew. The Doctor objects to being forced to repeatedly tend to the crew's injuries and then send them back to the simulations.

He and Kim, who has been kept on the Bridge working to expand the holodecks, secretly team up to find a way to disable the crew's neural interfaces so they will remember who they are and fight back. Kim and the Doctor are able to meet secretly when Kim transfers the Doctor to a corridor using newly installed holo-emitters. After treating Seven in Sickbay for serious gunshot wounds, the Doctor uses one of her Borg implants to create a jamming signal against her neural interface.

With her mind free from their control, she admits that she does not remember anything after the Hirogen invaded Voyager. The Doctor explains the situation, then sends her back into the World War II simulation with instructions to find a control panel to access the Bridge relay so that he and Kim can deactivate the rest of the crew's neural interfaces. She does so and the Doctor disables Janeway's implant.

American forces, including Chakotay and Paris as the commanding officer and his subordinate, arrive and battle against the Nazis. When a simulated explosion blows out some of the hologrid, the soldiers see into Voyager's decks and mistake them for a Nazi compound. As American and Nazi soldiers swarm into the ship, the Hirogen have a real war on their hands.

MEDICAL REPORT:

The Doctor treats the following crewmembers. Janeway is stabbed during a Klingon battle. After treatment the Hirogen send her into the World War II holoprogram. Neelix is shot and has bullet fragments lodged in his shoulder. Seven is also shot and suffers fractured vertebrae and a punctured lung. The Doctor says that she was a mess after the Crusades. At one point the Doctor protests to Alpha Hirogen that he has treated 28 wounded and had one fatality in the past 12 hours.
