MEDICAL LOGS
MORTAL COIL
Season 4 : Episode 80
MEDICAL REPORT:
While part of an away team which enters a nebula to collect a sample of protomatter, one of the best energy sources in the quadrant, Neelix is struck dead by an energy discharge when the transporter beam intended to transport the sample seems to be responsible for accidentally igniting the protomatter, destabilising it and knocking out the shuttle's shields. Seven donates 70 microgrammes of nanoprobes from her bloodstream to resuscitate Neelix. Neelix is dead for 18 hours 49 minutes 13 seconds when Seven's donated nanoprobes are injected into him to reverse cellular necrosis, while the cerebral cortex is stimulated with a neuro-electric isopulse.

Until the damaged tissue can function independently, Neelix has to be injected with nanoprobes daily. During an unleashing of frustration on Seven, arguing that his life is no longer worth living now that his deepest beliefs have been shattered, Neelix suddenly cries out in pain because his cells are reverting to a necrotic state. Neelix's tissue is rejecting the Borg nanoprobes, but Seven makes the necessary modification to compensate.

Neelix lashes out at Seven
With Neelix back in Sickbay, the Doctor reports to Janeway that Neelix's body had rejected the Borg nanoprobes, but Seven reports that they have modified the nanoprobes - Neelix is stable, for now. The Doctor has given him a monitor to wear to warn of possible future necrosis. He warns that Neelix may have to live with the condition for the rest of his life.

Meanwhile, Seven has been continuing to ingest foods to which Neelix has been adding spices to enhance the taste. Although not mentioned in the story, the Doctor is presumably carrying out some form of supervision of Seven's diet, considering his detailed description of acceptable foodstuffs in
[#74 The Raven].
MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION:
Seven notes that Naomi Wildman is not listed on the crew manifest. This would not mean that the Doctor does not give her medical attention as with the rest of the crew.
OTHER:
In addition to being given a name in this episode, it is observed that Naomi Wildman has grown to the age of four. The Doctor gives a possible reason for this rapid growth when he says: "The early stages of Ktarian development are astounding. Naomi has grown five centimetres since her last physical, and that was only three weeks ago."
DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
To the resurrected Neelix: "For 18 hours 49 minutes 13 seconds - congratulations, Mr Neelix, you've just set a new world record."
