MEDICAL REPORT:

The Doctor asks Dammar, the first Nyrian to appear on Voyager, to describe the physical sensation of his experience. Dammar replies: "First I felt light-headed. Then everything around me seemed to bend or ripple. There, there was a moment of blackness and, er, I felt a curious sensation of insects crawling on my skin, and then I found myself on your ship." The Doctor says he will run a microcellular scan for residual energy traces.

Crewmembers gradually disappear one at a time, each time replaced by an apparently bewildered Nyrian. There is a consistent interval of 9 minutes and 20 seconds between the exchanges. Each Nyrian is escorted to Sickbay for a medical check-up. With their numbers rising, the Doctor wrily comments: "Welcome to Sickbay. Take a number." Nyrians prefer warm dark climates with low humidity.

Doctor: "Welcome to Sickbay. Take a number."

DOCTOR'S LOG:

The Nyrians' arrival is in fact a slow form of invasion. The first crewmember to disappear, in exchange for Dammar, is Kes, whom the Doctor says is late for her duty shift; she disappeared at 1132 hours. Chakotay is the last crewmember left on Voyager and is pursued to Sickbay where the Doctor buys him time to download his program into the mobile emitter by defending Sickbay's main entrance, by using a hypospray sedative on a Nyrian intruder. When Chakotay has to surrender, he is transported by the Nyrians off Voyager but secretly takes with him the Doctor's program within the mobile emitter.

the Doctor buys enough time for Chakotay to download his program into the mobile emitter before having to surrender. The Nyrians then transport Chakotay off Voyager.

The Nyrians have imprisoned thousands from numerous species in a large ship containing 94 different self-contained biospheres (described as "habitats" or "compounds"). The crew are captive in ten compounds spread over 4 square kilometres. The compounds have food dispensers programmed with selections from Voyager's computer files and literature and entertainment downloaded from the ship's cultural database. The previous residents of Voyager's habitat were all killed by a plague. Chakotay, and thus the Doctor, is put in the same compound as Janeway and other senior officers such as Tuvok, Paris and Torres. The Doctor says he has never been completely cut off from the ship before and worries what might happen if the mobile emitter's power supply runs out. He is modified to function as a tricorder when his optical sensors are re-aligned to pick up the microwave signature of the portals which are located between compounds.

Left: Torres adjusts controls on the mobile emitter to modify the Doctor's optical sensors. Right: the Doctor's amended view.

the Doctor, after looking throughout the compound, finds a portal

MEDICAL PERSONNEL:

Kes is translocated from Voyager at the exact same time that Dammar the Nyrian appears on board. Consequently she is late for her duty shift and misses the Doctor's examination of Dammar.

Kes in the Nyrian compound: "They've given us food, water and medical supplies; everything but information."

EMH SPECIFICATION:

In the Nyrian compound, the Doctor is modified to function as a tricorder when his optical sensors are re-aligned to pick up the microwave signature of the portals. See screenshots above.

MOBILE EMITTER:

The Doctor's mobile emitter can be adjusted to inhibit his ability to speak using a control located on the mobile emitter.

Torres mutes the Doctor. After she and Paris have exchanged (heated) words, the Doctor shows her his arm in mute demand for voice restoration

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

Sarcastically, about the modification of his optical sensors: "Then I can begin my new career as a tricorder."
