REAL LIFE
Season 3 : Episode 64

EMH SPECIFICATION:

Torres gives the Doctor little "tune-ups" on a regular basis, since he has been doing some tinkering with his system. The Doctor's database contains what he believes is all he needs to know about paediatric care and child development.

MEDICAL REPORT:

The energy from the plasma within an astral eddy could give the crew extra power, allowing them to go off replicator rations for a while. When one forms at the confluence of space and subspace, Paris volunteers to take the shuttlecraft Cochrane into it and use the shuttle's Bussard collectors (with modification) to gather some of the highly-charged plasma particles. The Doctor administers Paris medication, a combination of hyronalin and lectrazine, as a temporary protection against radiation from the astral eddy's plasma wake. Paris receives a mild concussion from the turbulence while piloting the shuttlecraft Cochrane. (lectrazine, administered to stabilise cavdiovascular and renal systems in humanoid patients, is used in click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#35 Lifesigns], click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#49 Sacred Ground], click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#52 Warlord] and click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#75 Scientific Method]).

The Doctor works on a DNA probe to test Ensign Parsons' glial cells for a microbial infection.

But the Doctor tells Kes: "I've been trying to do an immuno-genicity analysis on Ensign Parson's cell culture, and I can't seem to get the measurements right." Kes performs the work instead.

DOCTOR'S LOG:

In an effort to expand the horizons of his program, the Doctor creates a holofamily (Family Program Beta-Rho) consisting of a wife named Charlene, a teenage son named Jeffrey and a young daughter named Belle.

the Doctor and his holofamily

After he invites Kes and Torres to dine with his all-too-perfect family, Torres offers to adjust the Doctor's holofamily to be more realistic by adding some randomised behavioural algorithms to the program events so they will unfold based on probability.

But when the Doctor revisits his family, he experiences consternation at the changes - suddenly his wife's work conflicts with his idea of family unity, his son's Klingon friends are having a disruptive influence, and his daughter's incessant whining only gets on his nerves. The Doctor holds a family meeting but instead of restoring peace and order the family members rebel against the timetable he wants to impose, and Jeffrey decides to leave home. The Doctor tries to talk things out with his rebellious son. The conversation turns into an argument which is interrupted when word arrives that Belle has been serously injured in an accident while playing Parisses Squares. After she receives surgery, the Doctor realises she is going to die and abruptly ends the program. When Paris returns to Voyager and is treated in Sickbay, he persuad the Doctor to return to his holofamily program and face the pain that life sometimes delivers. The Doctor reactivates the program and then allows himself to witness Belle's death, to grieve and draw comfort from the new closeness the tragedy brings to the remaining members of his family.
