MEDICAL LOGS
FUTURE'S END, Part 2
Season 3 : Episode 51
DOCTOR'S LOG:
Starling's office is equipped with a holographic simulator for testing new microchip designs. Holographic emitters are placed throughout the room. This enables the villainous Starling to generate the Doctor's program. When he does so, the Doctor refers to his recent program loss and notes that he is still in the process of retrieving his memory files (see entry for
[#46 The Swarm]). Starling reconfigures the Doctor's tactile response sensors to allow him to feel pain, and tortures the Doctor in an unsuccessful attempt to elicit Janeway's psychological profile.

When Starling goes to meet astronomer Rain Robinson who has joined forces with Paris and Tuvok, Starling equips the Doctor with an autonomous self-sustaining mobile holoemitter which allows him to move freely because his program can now easily be downloaded back and forth from the computer to the emitter, thereby enabling the Doctor to exist in environments without holographic emitters. The mobile emitter (as it will in future be commonly known) is a piece of 29th century Federation technology that Starling has stolen from the 29th century Federation timeship Aeon.

After being extricated from his hostage situation, the Doctor uses the mobile emitter to go on an away mission near Phoenix, Arizona, where he rescues Chakotay and Torres from captivity by an extremist paramilitary group.
MEDICAL REPORT:
Voyager's weapons offline the crew can arm photon torpedoes but cannot launch them as the launch activation sequencers do not respond to commands. Therefore, in order to stop Starling as he starts the Aeon on a journey to the 29th century where they know he will cause the destruction of Earth's solar system, Janeway orders Kim to open the access portal to Torpedo Bay 1. She goes there and reconfigures the torpedo for manual launch. With the activation sequencers down she has to launch from inside the tube. The torpedo destroys Starling, but she is burned by the plasma exhaust from the photon torpedo. Chakotay has anticipated this and sent the Doctor to her. As the Doctor is unsure of the way, he sends Ensign Kaplan to show him the way. Janeway rejects the Doctor's advice that she go to Sickbay for treatment. Instead she, accompanied by the Doctor, goes to the Bridge.

EMH SPECIFICATION/MOBILE EMITTER:
When the Voyager crew manages to thwart Starling they mostly restore the timeline, but they retain their memories of the adventure, and the Doctor retains the mobile emitter - it means that henceforth he is not confined to Sickbay as his program can be downloaded/uploaded from/to the ship's computer.

To Starling, diagnosing him: "A paranoid response indicative of bipolar personality disorder. If my history is accurate, southern California in the late 20th century had no shortage of psychotherapists, competent and otherwise. I suggest you find one. Now, return me to Voyager." | ![]() |
