BASICS, Part 1
Season 2 : Episode 42

MEDICAL REPORT:

En route into a known trap by the Kazon-Nistrim in order to rescue Seska's new-born baby, whom she has told Chakotay was sired using his stolen DNA, Voyager comes upon a damaged Kazon shuttle manned by Tierna, one of Seska's aides. The Doctor treats the injured Tierna with 40 milligrammes of pulmozine to combat the toxic nitrogen tetroxide fumes the patient inhaled in his shuttle's cabin. The Doctor reports that Tierna shows signs of polycythemia, a blood disorder, but unknown to any of the Voyager crew at the time it is actually the result of the chemicals in his bloodstream which he will later detonate so as to cripple the ship and enable it to be captured by Kazon boarding parties. Meanwhile, Chakotay distrusts Tierna and his information and asks the Doctor to perform an Autonomic Response Analysis (ARA). An ARA is a form of lie-detector test which, according to the Doctor, depends on making a baseline comparison with the known response for a given species, but it cannot be used with any of the new species of the Delta Quadrant because there is no record from which to make the comparison.

Tierna in Sickbay, and the Doctor answers Chakotay's request for an ARA

DOCTOR'S LOG:

In anticipation of a Kazon trap, the crew program the deflector grid to use a method of echo displacement to fool the Kazon scanners into seeing multiple decoy images. They also install holoemitters along the hull, with parabolic mirrors to enlarge the images as they are reflected into space so they can project holographic Talaxian ships. The process uses up a lot of the power reserves. The Doctor is accidentally beamed into space where he is lucky to avoid the crossfire as the Kazon fire at Voyager and the decoys.

EMH SPECIFICATION:

As indicated in click for MEDICAL LOGS episode entry [#33 Dreadnought], the Doctor's program cannot be downloaded and removed from the ship as it is an integral part of Sickbay's systems. Janeway tries to initiate the auto-destruct system to prevent Voyager's capture by the Kazon, but the Kazon's advisor Seska has anticipated this and targetted the secondary command systems resulting in the auto-destruct system being unusable. Had Janeway been able to set the auto-destruct, even if the crew were able to depart in escape pods, the Doctor would not be able to and would be destroyed along with the ship.

DOCTOR'S LOG:

The Doctor sets his medical holographic automatic recall for 12 hours so he can hide from the Kazon as they search the ship.

MEDICAL PERSONNEL:

Kes and any other medical personnel are removed by the Kazon, along with all the rest of the crew they can find, and are stranded on the primitive planet Hanon IV. The Doctor is the only medically-qualified crewmember left aboard.

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:

As he is accidentally transferred into space: "Help! Man overboard!" See above under DOCTOR'S LOG.
