MEDICAL REPORT:

Janeway and Chakotay are infected by the virus when bitten by a burrowing insect on a planet. Janeway and Chakotay are left in stasis on the planet for seventeen days. For a month the Doctor does not deactivate himself as he works constantly to try and find a cure. (These events are not seen on the television screen.) Eventually he revives Janeway and Chakotay and reports his failure. He notes that something in the planet's environment shields them from the effects of the virus, which leads them to settle on the planet and send Voyager on its way with Tuvok acting now as the captain.

Janeway and Chakotay get out of the stasis chambers and hear the Doctor's report

Due to pressure from the crew, Tuvok disobeys Janeway's order and contacts the Vidiians (whose medical technology is very advanced). Danara Pel says that the Vidiians possess an antiviral agent which will counteract the virus. The Vidiians arrange to rendezvous with Voyager to hand it over but, unknown to Danara, the Vidiians set a trap and ambush Voyager. Danara secretly contacts the Doctor and Tuvok devises a plan which successfully obtains the serum and extricates Voyager from the trap. Voyager then retrieves Janeway and Chakotay and it is presumably the Doctor who administers the serum although the treatment is not seen on the television screen.

During the Vidiian attack on Voyager, a crewwoman with a broken arm walks into Sickbay and the Doctor orders Kes to set it with the osteogenic stimulator, whereupon Kes leads her to the primary biobed. An osteogenic stimulator is a medical device utilised to accelerate the healing of bone fractures, and is also noted in [DS9: Distant Voices].

OTHER MEDICAL DATA:

As indicated above, a function of an osteogenic stimulator is to set a broken arm.

DOCTOR'S LOG:

Danara calls the Doctor by the name Shmullus, which she gave him when they met - see entry  [#35 Lifesigns].

DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
