MEDICAL LOGS
DEADLOCK
Season 2 : Episode 37
MEDICAL REPORT AND MORGUE RECORD:
| Below: the baby's delivery and death:
| As Voyager enters a plasma cloud to evade approaching Vidiian ships, Ensign Wildman goes into labour, which lasts at least 7 hours. At one point the Doctor reports: "Cervical dilation is at 10.2 centimetres. Prostaglandin levels are normal." The Doctor delivers her of a baby girl. But when the crew emerges from the cloud, an odd series of events occur when the warp engines stall, the antimatter supplies drain, and proton bursts emanating from an unknown source cause a hull breach on deck 15 through which Kim is taken to his death, and 15 crewmembers are seriously wounded with plasma burns, 27 suffer other injuries, and the baby dies when osmotic pressure therapy fails to treat haemocythemia, a medical condition in which intercellular pressures are unstable. This condition is also called hemocythemic imbalance and could be treated with osmotic pressure therapy. As regards the baby, during the delivery the baby shifts position and her exo-cranial ridges lodge in the uterine wall. This is a rare complication, but has been known to happen in human/Ktarian pregnancies. The Doctor cannot reposition the baby, since her spinal column is too fragile and he does not want to risk nerve damage. If they had not delivered the baby immediately, her ridges could have perforated the uterus and caused her mother to suffer internal bleeding. To deliver the baby safely, the Doctor carries out a foetal transport, beaming the baby from Wildman's body directly into a small life support unit. Wildman is surprised to have a girl, as she was expecting a boy. The baby's incisors will erupt in three to four weeks. Since Wildman does not have the scales of a Ktarian, the Doctor says they will need to discuss breast-feeding options. As Voyager's hull breach widens, the ship is forced to run on emergency power. Eventually the crew realise that they and the ship have been duplicated - a divergence field had caused every particle of matter on the ship to duplicate in the instant they passed through the field; the two ships are linked by the antimatter in the warp drive, but there is not enough antimatter to sustain both vessels; one ship fires the proton bursts which are damaging the other. On one Voyager, there is no structural or systems damage, and both Kim and Wildman's baby are alive. On the other Voyager, there is massive damage, and the Doctor sets up triage facilities in Sickbay and Holodeck 2. An attempt to merge the two ships fails. When a Vidiian ship approaches, the two Captain Janeways know they must act quickly or both ships and crews will be destroyed. The Vidiians board the undamaged Voyager and start harvesting healthy organs from the crew they kill, with the organs destined for transplant into Vidiians as a way of battling the phage. Realising that the odds are against her, the Janeway of the undamaged Voyager sets her ship on self-destruct, and orders her Kim to take Wildman's baby through the deck 15 "portal" between the two ships. The Vidiians are destroyed when the duplicate Voyager explodes, while Kim, the baby and the other Voyager crew are saved. The duplicate Kim hands the duplicate baby to Ensign Wildman, in Sickbay, while the Doctor conducts a medical check-up. | Below: the healthy baby and eventual transfer through the rift, in the arms of another Kim, to another Voyager
|
MEDICAL PERSONNEL:
After Kes disappears from the damaged Voyager (and ends up on the other Voyager), Paris is ordered to assist the Doctor.
EMH SPECIFICATION:
The Doctor now has a backup power supply. He says he is programmed to be heroic when the need arises.
DUPLICATE DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
To the duplicate Ensign Wildman: "It's going to be alright, Ensign. Give her to me and I'll hide her inside an access port. If they do break in, it's unlikely that they'll look for anyone there. Trust me, Ensign. I won't let anyone touch our baby."
DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
"I am programmed to be heroic when the need arises. By the way, Ensign, this other doctor, did he have a name?"
