MEDICAL LOGS
HEROES AND DEMONS
Season 1 : Episode 12
DOCTOR'S LOG:
The Doctor goes on his first away mission, to the Holodeck and into Kim's 'Beowulf' program. With Kim, then Chakotay and Tuvok going missing, theorised converted into energy and imprisoned in a protostar's photonic lattice near to Voyager, the Doctor's assignment is to investigate. To transfer him to the Holodeck, the crew has to modify his datastream protocols and imaging systems. Torres gives him complete control over his magnetic containment field so that he can make himself solid or allow matter to pass through him, an ability which will soon prove useful. He chooses the name Schweitzer (after the historic figure Albert Schweitzer) but abandons it after his first romantic experience, with holocharacter Freya, leads to him losing her when she sacrifices her life for him. Before then, introduced as a great warrior by Freya to her people, the Doctor sees off a challenge by duel from a sceptical holowarrior by simply allowing the opponent's heavy sword to cleave through him i.e. through nothing but light. The holowarrior bruises his hand as a result and the Doctor recommends he put some ice on it (to stop the swelling).

The Doctor is the guest of honour at supper and, asked to describe his heroic exploits, regales them with medical exploits such as how he prevented an epidemic. Later, contact with the photonic energy being disrupts the Doctor's magnetic cohesion, resulting in his having to be returned to Sickbay where he discovers the loss of his right arm.

Paris replaces the right arm for the Doctor's second excursion to the Holodeck. This time the Doctor takes, inside a container, a photonic energy being who had been mistakenly brought aboard as a photonic matter sample from the protostar. He releases the being and achieves the release of Kim, Chakotay and Tuvok, and at the same time he achieves first contact of a kind. Janeway places a special commendation in the logs for his exemplary performance by the chief medical officer during his first away mission.

MEDICAL PERSONNEL:
Kes continues her medical studies. She has finished studying the protein synthesis text and is ready to move on to learning how to operate the base pair sequencer.
NOTE:
Freyja or Freya was the Norse goddess of love and fertility (distinct from Frigga, goddess of conjugal love), making it an appropriate choice of name for the Doctor's lover. One assumes that the story's writer Naren Shankar was aware of this.
DOCTOR'S QUOTE:
To Kes: "I can describe every detail of every piece of equipment in this Sickbay, from biobed to neurostimulator. But I've never even seen a sky or a forest, let alone Vikings and monsters. I can't afford to fail, but I don't know what to expect in that holodeck."
